Ogden Pub Runners (OPR) is committed, not only to running and having a great time doing so, but also to supporting important causes in our community and causes that are close to our members’ hearts.
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence is defined by the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone.
Imagine having completed 2 marathons and a half marathon by the time you were 20 years old only to then be forbidden to run by an abusive partner. Our own Kerissa Anaya experienced just this. In order to protect her unborn daughter, Kerissa left and has since become a stronger, healthier, happier and more powerful woman. Her daughter is the complete light of her life and she does it all on her own. She has begun running again and has become an even better version of the old Kerissa.
Today she has to run daily. It helps her sort out her thoughts, her problems and her joys. In the spring of 2014 she completed a seven-mile leg on a relay team for the Ogden Marathon. Joining the Pub Runners has been great social outlet for her. She’s met great people and has a joined an OPR Ragnar Las Vegas team.
Next Thursday, October 1st 2015, Kerissa is receiving the Survivor Award from the YCC. Along with her award and speech is, YCC’s 18th Annual Footsteps to Light where they will remember the men, women and children they have lost due to domestic violence in the previous year while honoring survivors. Congratulations Kerissa! Your family and your OPR friends are so proud of you.
Ogden Pub Runners will hold our Weekly Run on October 1st starting with the Footsteps to Light march, the Awards at the YCC, a run (if you choose) and after party at Kamikazes.
Please check out the event page for details and join us to support Kerrisa and this very important cause.
Congratulations again on a very special award, Kerissa!
Love, your OPR friends.
